Reader’s Digest released a 10 LP set called “The Great Band Era” in 1965. As a companion album Frank Coughlan & his Dixielanders recorded an LP called “The Great Band Era – Australia”. While it contains highly enjoyable performances the stylistic direction is a little odd seeing as the original set showcased big band hits spanning 1936-45.
Frank was an elder statesman of Australian jazz (born 1904). For the recording he surrounded himself with a number of up and coming young players, a number of whom became major figures on the Oz jazz scene in later years.
