Inspired by the iconic paintings found in the Orthodox Christian Church that he attended with his aunt and uncle as a child, Steve Heimann creates paintings that evoke the mystery, the splendor and the continuity of humanity. He abstracts elements from the body—eyes, lips, a cradling arm—to direct his viewer's attention to the spiritual essence contained in each individual and to suggest a connection with "something larger." Heimann studied at both the Parsons School of Design and the Art Students League in New York City. He also taught at Pratt Institute, Manhattan, and lectured at Kean University in Union, New Jersey. He is influenced by primitive art as well as the artists Joan Miro, Rufino Tamayo, Paul Klee, Willem de Kooning and Jean Dubuffet. This artistic heritage can be seen in Heimann's graphic fragmentation of the body, his subtle use of color and pattern, and his inspired use of surface techniques that include scraping, drybrush, scumbling and palette knife applications. Heimann's distinctive style is extended to an international audience through numerous commissions for postage stamps. Countries who commissioned stamps include the British Virgin Islands, Grenada, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Dominica, and Antigua/Barbuda Postal Services. In 1999, seven paintings were featured in Extreme Homes, a production of the Home & Garden Network. His work is also featured in the corporate collection of Ciba-Geigy Corporation and SmithKline Beecham.
