Sweetbone (swētbōn), n.
A delicious blend of Hard Rock, Funk, Reggae and other indigenous grooves with particular emphasis on commercial appeal, social commentary, intelligent humor, and over-all ability to KICK MAJOR ASS!!!
Sweetbone…hmmm…How do you describe a rock band who’s only purpose in life is to move people emotionally, mentally, physically, sexually and literally, using only their words and music? You WILL decide for yourself!
Sweetbone’s music can be labeled in many ways, and will, but we like to describe it as Chocolate Pimp Rock with a Roots cherry on top. “Music for the people, by the people”. Some have called it Dread Rock or Heavy MeNtal Music because of our Reggae and Metal influences, but make no mistake, this is a Rock Band, first and foremost. Think of Van Halen and Parlament Funkadelic thrown into a blender with Bob Marley and you might get close to the concept.
Sweetbone was founded in June of 2001 by David Southwood-Smith (Big Smood) and Martin Juan Diaz (Tasty Licks) after both of them realized that by combining their skills and different influences, they could create a unique sound that still takes the listener to a familiar place. Each of these founding members has extensive experience singing, playing in bands and contributing to recording projects, but until Sweetbone, neither had found the right environment to create music on a higher level. After several months of auditions, Scott Greenbaum (G-Baum) was selected to join the rock trio on drums and vocals. An accomplished drummer, having played the DC circuit for several years, Scott’s solid grooves and reckless abandon towards the skins was just what was needed to complete the powerful sound of Sweetbone.
“Ultimately, we write and play because we want to make people feel good with our music.” To quote a Sweetbone song, “Enjoy the good things life, And take care of each other, So what you waitin’ for, Just Spark Dat Mutha!”
